Hats at Melbourne Cup Hong Kong Nov 4th 2014

It was my first time to attend the Melbourne Cup event in Happy Valley Race Course hosted by Oz Hong Kong. The race was televised live on the big screen and betting counters were open for business. Even though I never saw a live horse, I really felt like I was "at the races". The festivities began with a champagne reception followed by best dressed and best hat competition and a draw with fantastic prizes from local Hong Kong business's. The Aussies sure do know how to celebrate this national day and it felt like I was actually down under with the hum of Aussie accents everywhere and all the attendees in flying form.  See below photos featuring  hats worn on the day and happy racegoers enjoying an all day midweek session topped off with DJ and dancing.

Winner of best hat competition far right

These hats are colour coordinated with outfits for the full effect.

Lovely brimmed hat with an elegant romantic vibe.

Some of the hats at my table taken off while the wearers had lunch.

The black and white colour cordinated ladies having a blast.

Feminine and ladylike, these girls got it going on with their fascinators.

This could be a new trend for the chaps.

Blue butterflies for an added touch of whimsy.

More lovely fascinators.

Friends enjoying each other.

Great bunch of girls at my table. Kirsten far right wearing a NOELEEN design.

Two beautiful ladies wearing sinamay hats.

The lovely Laura wearing the late Australian Milliner Greer MacDonald's hand weaved pillbox hat.

Met a fellow Irish woman with a striking sinamay minipill box with structured bow.

Here I am with my Husband Andy who looks dapper in his cream suit. I am wearing my own creation named " Captains Bar" after the famous bar in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hong Kong.

I celebrate hat wearing from all genres with varying themes, sizes and colours. It does not matter to me if the hat is large, small, midsize, a pillbox, a hatinator, a fascinator, a cocktail hat a percher. What matters to me is the effort ladies put in when they decide to wear a hat. The hat they choose is a representation of themselves of their own style.  Hats are fun and they make women feel glamorous, sexy, confident, happy and more beautiful. How boring it would be if women conformed to certain opinions within the fashion world of what some self proclaimed expert considers to be chic. Style is a personal decision and I don't judge anyone on their choices. I would rather celebrate individuality. Not everyone can afford couture hats but this does not stop women from loving hats and the feelings they evoke when they wear them. A percentage of  women collect couture hats and appreciate the age old craft of millinery and see hats as wearable art. Other creative women prefer to make their own hats for special occasions whilst fashionistas on a budget will go hunting for the perfect hat and find it. Hats are for everyone. There is enough to go around. At the end of the day people wear hats to improve their overall appearance and feel good about themselves. Its a well known fact that grown women still love to play dress up.  I believe hats add the final touch to complete an outfit. It is all in the details. Years ago a woman would never dream of leaving the house without her hat. I believe that day will come again and "I will" it to happen. Fashion always comes full circle and I truly believe hats will be back with a vengeance. Long live the hat and the dedicated hat wearers that promote hat wearing.

Next blog will be all about Sasa ladies Purse day in Hong Kong.

All the best,
